If you love finding the deal, you probably shop at places like, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and Amazon’s Daily Deals.

But do you go to T.J. Maxx enough to make getting the TJ Maxx Credit Card worth it?

We’ll look at how the card works, its features, benefits, and drawbacks and make a call if we think it’s worth it.

Note: The TJ Maxx Credit Card is technically called the TJX Rewards Credit Card or the TJX Rewards Platinum MasterCard. We’ll use the terms interchangeably, and explain the key differences with the Platinum MasterCard version along the way too.

TJ Maxx Credit Card In Brief

You’ll earn 5 points for every $1 spent at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Sierra Trading Post stores (the TJX family of stores)  in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and online at tjmaxx.com or sierratradingpost.com.

You earn rewards certificates in increments of $10, so that means that every time you spend $200 at TJX stores, you’ll earn $10 worth of rewards certificates.

Pros

  • 5% in-store credit rewards for purchases across the TJX family of stores
  • 10% one-time discount on receipts worth of purchases the same day you open the card
  • Potential to receive exclusive promotions and discounts

Cons

  • The TJX Rewards Credit Card version of this card does not work anywhere outside of the TJX family of stores
  • The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard version of this card rewards rate for purchases outside the TJX family of stores is only 1%
  • Rewards are given in the form of rewards certificates that only work at TJX stores, instead of cash back
  • Generally, we don’t think the rewards rate of 5% is worth managing an extra credit card, unless you shop there ALOT. Remember most people can get a flat rate, unlimited 2% cash back card that works everywhere. You will have to spend alot at TJ Maxx to make that extra 3% worth it.

Understanding the TJ Maxx Credit Card Options

If you’re interested in getting a TJ Maxx Credit Card, it’s important to understand the different options available to you. The two card options are the TJX Rewards Credit Card and the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard. Understanding the differences between these two cards can help you make an informed decision about which is right for you.

TJX Rewards Credit Card

The TJX Rewards Credit Card is the basic card option for TJ Maxx shoppers. With this card, you can earn rewards points for your purchases at TJ Maxx stores. You’ll also get access to exclusive discounts and offers and special shopping events. The rewards points can be redeemed for merchandise credits that can be used at any TJ Maxx store. Additionally, you’ll receive a special birthday gift each year. The TJX Rewards Credit Card has no annual fee, making it a great choice for those who want to enjoy the card’s benefits without any additional costs.

The “catch” here though is that this card only works at TJX’s family of stores – T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and HomeSense – it cannot be used at other stores and merchants like a “regular” credit card.

TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard

The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard is a step up from the basic credit card. With this card, you’ll earn rewards points for your purchases at TJ Maxx and its affiliated stores, as well as anywhere else Mastercard is accepted. You’ll earn 1 point for every $1 spent on purchases anywhere Mastercard is accepted outside of the TJX family of stores. You’ll also get all the benefits of the standard credit card, along with a few additional perks. These perks include extended warranty coverage, price protection, and identity theft resolution services – typical credit card perks.

It also has no annual fee.

If you’re a big TJ Maxx shopper, the 5% rewards are a nice perk beyond what you will typically get in a cash-back credit card of around 1-2%. However, if you use the card outside of the TJX family, you’re only getting 1% in rewards that can only be redeemed at TJX stores, which we don’t love.

Comparing the Two Card Options

When it comes to choosing between the two TJ Maxx Credit Card options, it’s important to consider your shopping habits and budget. If you’re someone who primarily shops at TJ Maxx and its affiliated stores, the TJX Rewards Credit Card is likely the best option for you. With no annual fee and the ability to earn rewards points on your purchases, you’ll be able to save money on your shopping trips.

However, if you frequently shop at other stores and want to earn rewards on those purchases as well, the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard may be the better choice. With the ability to earn rewards points at a variety of stores, as well as the added benefits of extended warranty coverage, price protection, and identity theft resolution services, the TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard can be a great way to earn rewards points and protect yourself while you shop. Just know that you can likely beat the general 1% rewards rate.

How to Apply for a TJ Maxx Credit Card

Here’s what you need to know about applying for a TJ Maxx Credit Card.

Online Application Process

One of the easiest ways to apply for a TJ Maxx Credit Card is through the online application process. To get started, simply visit the TJ Maxx website and click on the “Credit Card” link. From there, you’ll be prompted to fill out an application with your personal information, income details, and other necessary data. Be sure to provide accurate and up-to-date information to increase your chances of approval.

You will also be asked to select whether you prefer the TJX Rewards Credit Card or The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard (see detailed difference description above).

Once you’ve submitted your application, you should receive a decision on your approval within a few business days, some people will receive a decision instantly. If you’re approved, you’ll receive your card in the mail within a week or two. If you’re not approved, you may receive a letter explaining why.

In-Store Application Process

If you prefer to apply for your TJ Maxx Credit Card in-store, simply visit your local TJ Maxx and ask for an application. One of the store associates will be happy to assist you. You’ll need to fill out the same information as the online application and provide appropriate identification to complete the process.

One odd thing we noticed with the in-store application is that it states that you cannot list your preference for whether you would like the regular TJX Rewards Credit Card or The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard and that instead that determination will be made for you during the application process. We found this quite odd and not something we’ve seen elsewhere. So on that basis alone, you may want to go for the online application.

Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive a decision on your approval within a few business days. If you’re approved, you can start using your card right away to take advantage of exclusive discounts and rewards. If you’re not approved, don’t worry – there are other credit cards available that may better suit your needs.

What is the TJ Maxx credit card limit?

Most people’s initial credit limit on the card will only be $200-$500, which is typical for store credit cards, and may be raised over time.

When you’re approved for a TJ Maxx Credit Card, you’ll be provided with a credit limit that’s determined based on the information you provide. This credit limit will determine how much you can spend on your card each month. It’s important to use your card responsibly and pay your balance in full each month to avoid accruing interest charges and other fees.

Overall, applying for a TJ Maxx Credit Card is a simple and straightforward process. Whether you choose to apply online or in-store, be sure to provide accurate information and use your card responsibly to take advantage of all the benefits it has to offer.

What does your credit score have to be to get a credit card at TJ Maxx?

You will likely need a credit score of around 650. Like most store credit cards, TJ Maxx and Synchrony Bank don’t publish a specific limit and take your entire application details into consideration. However, based on experience, typically you will need to have a score of around 650 or so to be approved.

Your approval for a TJ Maxx Credit Card will likely depend on your credit score and income details. If you have a good credit score and a steady income, you’re more likely to be approved for the card. However, even if you have a lower credit score or income, you may still be approved – it just may be for a lower credit limit.

Managing Your TJ Maxx Credit Card Account

Once you’ve been approved for a TJ Maxx Credit Card, it’s important to manage your account responsibly. This means keeping track of your spending, making payments on time, and avoiding fees whenever possible. Fortunately, managing your TJ Maxx Credit Card account is easy, thanks to a variety of online and mobile app features.

Remember to make on-time payments to avoid the VERY HIGH interest rate on this credit card!

Online Account Management

With the TJ Maxx Credit Card, you can easily manage your account online. This allows you to check your balance, view recent transactions, make payments, and more. Online account management is a great way to stay on top of your spending and ensure that you’re using your card responsibly.

In addition to checking your balance, online account management also allows you to monitor your account for any fraudulent activity. This is important because credit card fraud can happen to anyone, and it’s important to catch it early to minimize any potential damage to your credit score.

Mobile App Features

In addition to online account management, the TJ Maxx Credit Card also offers a mobile app with a variety of helpful features. With the app, you can easily view your account balance, make payments, set up alerts to remind you of upcoming payments, and more. The app is a great way to manage your card on the go and keep track of your spending.

The mobile app also allows you to view your rewards points balance and redeem your rewards for discounts on future purchases. This is a great way to save money while still enjoying the benefits of using your TJ Maxx Credit Card.

Making Payments and Avoiding Fees

One of the most important aspects of managing your TJ Maxx Credit Card account is making payments on time. Late payments can result in hefty fees and interest charges, so it’s important to make your payments on or before the due date. Setting up automatic payments can help ensure that you never miss a due date or incur any additional fees.

If you do happen to incur a fee, such as a late payment fee or an over-the-limit fee, it’s important to address it as soon as possible. Contacting customer service can help you resolve any issues and avoid any further fees.

Alternatives to the TJ Maxx Credit Card

While the TJ Maxx Credit Card is a great way to save money and earn rewards, it may not be the best option for everyone. If you’re looking for other alternatives, there are a variety of other store credit cards and cashback rewards credit cards available.

Other Store Credit Cards

Many other retailers offer their own credit cards with similar benefits and perks. For example, Target, Macy’s, and Kohl’s all offer store credit cards that allow you to save money and earn rewards. Target’s REDcard gives you 5% off on all purchases, free shipping, and an extended return period.

5% back in the form of store-credit rewards seems to be fairly typical across the industry. Watch out for how that 5% is given back though, it can range from an instant discount at the register to very difficult-to-use gift certificates that expire rapidly. The TJ Maxx Credit Card falls somewhere in between, they give store credit certificates, but they are pretty easy to use (can even use on their app), don’t expire for 2 years, and are issued in increments as low as $10 (requires just $200 in spending to earn).

Macy’s credit card holders receive exclusive discounts and earn rewards for every purchase. Kohl’s credit card holders receive discounts of up to 35% off and earn rewards for every dollar spent, for example.

Another great option is the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card, which gives you 5% back on all purchases made on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market, 2% back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, and 1% back on all other purchases. If you’re a frequent Amazon shopper, this card can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Cashback and Rewards Credit Cards

In addition to store credit cards, there are also many cashback and rewards credit cards available. These cards allow you to earn rewards points or cashback on every purchase, regardless of where you shop. If you’re someone who wants to earn rewards for every purchase you make, a cashback or rewards credit card may be a better fit for you than a store credit card.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited card is a great option for those who want to earn cashback on all purchases. You earn 1.5% cashback on every purchase, and there’s no limit to how much you can earn. Plus, you can earn a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months of opening the account.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a great option for those who want to earn travel rewards. You earn 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, and the miles can be redeemed for travel expenses like flights, hotels, and rental cars. Plus, you can earn a 60,000 mile bonus after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months of opening the account.

Choosing the Right Card for Your Needs

Ultimately, the right credit card for you depends on your shopping habits and financial goals. Before applying for any credit card, it’s important to carefully consider the benefits and drawbacks, as well as any associated fees. By doing some research and choosing the right credit card, you can maximize your savings and earn rewards no matter where you shop.
